Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz on Wednesday said that GOP senators are racing to avoid attending the Republican National Convention.

“You’ve got United States senators dropping like flies [and] deciding that they’re not going to their own convention,” the Florida lawmaker said on Fox Business Network’s “Mornings with Maria.” “Even John McCain, who’s vulnerable in the state of Arizona and is their previous Republican nominee, won’t attend the Republican National Convention,”

“That really forebodes the chaos that is continuing and will erupt during their convention,” she added of the event in Cleveland next July.

{mosads}The chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee on Tuesday had warned vulnerable colleagues to shun their own party’s presidential nominating convention.

“If there’s going to be a brouhaha, I’m advising candidates to be present for more unifying events,” Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) told The Hill.

McCain announced the same day that he is missing the event to focus on his race against Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick (D-Ariz.) instead.

“I have to campaign for reelection, and I have always done that when I’m up,” he said, citing Arizona’s late Senate primary scheduled for Aug. 30.

Wasserman Schultz on Wednesday said that Republican lawmakers are terrified of Donald Trump becoming their presidential nominee.

“Trump as the nominee is going to send shivers down the spine of the Republican Party,” she told host Maria Bartiromo.

“I think it bodes very well for our candidates. I think we take the Senate back [and] take significant numbers of seats in the House of Representatives.”
