Kasich: Trump would get ‘crushed’ by Clinton
Republican presidential hopeful John Kasich said rival Donald Trump would get “crushed” by Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton in the general election.
{mosads}“What I’m really fundamentally interested in is making sure that Hillary Clinton is not president,” Kasich said Friday at a Republican dinner in California. “And Donald Trump, if he goes to the convention first of all, if he were to be picked, he will get crushed in the fall.
“The fact is that I’m the only one that beats Hillary Clinton consistently in 15, 16 of the last polls. Also in the simulated Electoral College, I win there and these guys lose,” he said.
Kasich’s only hope for the nomination is a contested Republican National Convention, which would happen if none of the three Republican candidates amass the 1,237 delegates necessary to clinch the GOP nomination before the July convention in Cleveland.
Most delegates are tied to voting based on the results of the primary in their state but are free to back the candidate of their choice on subsequent ballots.
Kasich said he believes delegates will flip to supporting him after the first ballot.
“I understand it’s a steep climb. You know I don’t fall off a turnip truck on my way to California,” he said. “I know it’s tough. So what? I’ve been in tough fights before, and I’m just going to keep on moving forward, because I think it’s critical this country has a choice.”
