Grassley: Trump would pick ‘right type’ of Supreme Court justice
Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) says he think Donald Trump, the GOP’s presumptive presidential nominee, will pick the “right type” of Supreme Court nominees.
“Based upon the type of people he’d be looking for, I think I would expect the right type of people to be nominated by him to the Supreme Court,” Grassley told The Des Moines Register.
{mosads}Grassley, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which oversees judicial nominations, has refused to hold hearings or a vote for Judge Merrick Garland, President Obama’s nominee to fill the open Supreme Court seat.
Republicans have argued that the next president should make the appointment to fill the vacant seat following the death of Justice Antonin Scalia in February.
Some on the right, such as Leon Wolf, the managing editor of the conservative Red State website, called for Republicans to confirm Garland after Trump became the presumptive nominee this week.
Grassley said Trump has mentioned Judge William Pryor as someone he’d nominate. Pryor, from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit, was appointed by President George W. Bush.
Trump said in March he’d produce a list of around 10 Supreme Court picks.
