Priebus on Trump taco tweet: ‘He’s trying’

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus says Donald Trump’s Cinco de Mayo tweet showed he’s attempting to make inroads with Hispanic voters by changing his “tone.”

Trump made waves Thursday tweeting a picture of himself chowing down on a taco bowl with a caption reading, in part, “I love Hispanics!”

{mosads}Asked about the tweet Friday, Priebus paused.

“He’s trying,” he said, to laughter from the audience.

“Honestly, he’s trying, and I’ll tell you what — I honestly think he understands that building, unifying and growing the party is the only way we are going to win.”

Trump has garnered criticism throughout the campaign for controversial comments about women and minority groups.

Priebus argued that the GOP has made great strides to boost it’s presence in minority communities but that Trump’s “tone” as presumptive presidential nominee must match the rest of the party.

“You also need to have the tone at the top be the kind of tone where people believe you like them,” he said.

“There’s work to do on tone, I’ve been clear about that.”

Priebus added that he’s raised the issue with Trump and that he “understands it.”

“I think you are going to see the change in tone,” Priebus predicted.
