Michelle Fields warns Clinton camp: ‘Don’t treat Trump as serious candidate’
Reporter Michelle Fields on Monday said Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign cannot treat Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, as the former secretary of State’s equal.
“You see the Hillary Clinton campaign, they need to make sure that they don’t treat Trump as a serious candidate,” she told host Chris Hayes on MSNBC’s “All In.” “[It is] not to normalize Donald Trump. Treat him as though he is just this reality show star that’s unfit to be president.
{mosads}“Kris Jenner, she created the Kardashian empire. That doesn’t mean she’s fit to be president just because she has good business sense. Don’t talk about him as though he’s a regular candidate who’s fit to be president, because he’s not. That’s the case the Clinton campaign ought to be making.”
Fields inspired national headlines earlier this year. Working for the conservative site Brietbart, she experienced a physical run-in with Trump’s campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski.
Police in Jupiter, Fla., in March charged Lewandowski with simple battery after Fields said he forcefully grabbed her arm as she tried to ask Trump a question.
Authorities in Florida last month formally declined to prosecute Lewandowski over the encounter.
Reports emerged on Sunday that Fields is now covering Trump and the GOP for the liberal-leaning Huffington Post.
Fields on Monday said Clinton must not let Trump’s focus on her husband’s past sexual misconduct rattle her.
“We’re seeing Donald Trump attacking Hillary Clinton by attacking her husband saying he abuses women, and therefore, Hillary Clinton is an enabler,” she said of former President Bill Clinton.
“I think what Hillary ought to do is stay above the fray, show that you are much more above this man who’s running for president,” Fields added of the Democratic presidential front-runner.
“Let her surrogates, outside groups attack Trump and really call into question his relationship with women, because he doesn’t have a very good history when it comes to women and the derogatory statements he’s made about women.”
