Johnson makes case for Weld as Libertarian VP

Libertarian Party presidential nominee Gary Johnson on Sunday urged the party to nominate former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld as his running mate.

“If it’s not Bill Weld, I don’t think we have the opportunity of being elected president of the United States,” he said during his speech accepting the party’s nomination.

{mosads}During the speech, Johnson commended Weld, saying he’s made many national media appearances since announcing he was seeking the vice presidential nomination.

“Bill Weld was my role model,” he said.

“It’s your choice,” Johnson told people at the party’s convention on Sunday.

“I’m hopefully going to get elected president of the United States.”

If Weld gets the vice presidential nomination, Johnson said, he expects to make it into the presidential debates.

“If it’s not Bill Weld, I don’t think that that happens,” he said.

“If it is Bill Weld, there’s a real possibility that we achieve major party status in this country and who would have dreamed that that was possible four years ago?”

He urged people to “understand the opportunity.”

“I’m laying it in your hands and I know you’re going to make the right decision,” he said.
