Boxer: It’s a ‘joke’ to say all Clinton backers are ‘establishment’

Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) on Wednesday slammed Bernie Sanders for characterizing Hillary Clinton supporters as establishment Democrats.

“For Bernie to say [California Gov.] Jerry Brown is establishment is kind of the biggest joke of the day,” Boxer said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

{mosads}“And he has called me establishment — just because you’re supporting Hillary Clinton doesn’t mean you’re ‘establishment,’ ” added Boxer, who has endorsed Clinton for president.

“I love Bernie and he has been my friend for a long time. But you can’t just diss everybody who supports Hillary.”

Brown on Tuesday endorsed Clinton, just one week before California’s presidential primary.

“Hillary Clinton has convincingly made the case that she knows how to get things done and has the tenacity and skill to advance Democratic agenda,” he said in an online letter.

“Hillary Clinton, with her long experience, especially as secretary of State, has a firm grasp on the issues and will be prepared to lead our country on day one.”

Sanders responded by categorizing Brown as part of the Democratic establishment.

“I will tell you that in every state we have gone into, we have taken on the entire Democratic establishment,” he said later Tuesday in Emeryville, Calif., according to The Sacramento Bee.

“It’s not surprising to me that, you know, we will have the Democratic establishment supporting Hillary Clinton. I like Jerry Brown, but people can make their own choices.”

Clinton leads Sanders in delegates heading into the final few contests of the race.
