Presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump called the U.S. “stone-cold broke” in an interview aired Sunday, in part due to its “bad deals” with its allies.
{mosads}He said Japan isn’t paying enough for protection, adding that the U.S. has to be “prepared to walk” if Tokyo doesn’t start paying up.
“Why aren’t they paying at least the cost?” Trump asked on CNN “State of the Union.”
“We’re providing a tremendous service. Our country is stone-cold broke.”
He reiterated his stance that countries like Japan, Germany and Saudi Arabia should start paying the full price for U.S. protection.
“If they don’t make us whole, they may have to defend themselves,” Trump said.
“You have to be prepared to walk. If you aren’t prepared to walk — these are very smart people we’re dealing with. They’ve been ripping us off for a long time.”
