Sanders: Trump, Clinton both ‘make a point’ on who would take us to war
Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders on Sunday questioned whether both Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton and presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump have the judgment to serve as commander in chief.
“Well, I think, frankly, they both make a point,” he said on CNN’s “State of the Union” when asked about Clinton and Trump’s back-and-forth on who would take the United States to war.
{mosads}”War and peace issues are obviously an enormous consequence.”
Sanders said Trump does not have the “temperament” to serve in the White House.
“Is it possible that something will get him angry and he may want to get us involved in a war? Yes, I think that is a possibility,” Sanders said.
“On the other hand, let us also be clear. Secretary Clinton’s temperament is not Donald Trump’s, that’s for sure.”
But Sanders pointed to Clinton’s support for the war in Iraq, saying he and Clinton both studied the same information. He said he led the opposition to the war, while Clinton backed it.
The Vermont senator said he worries that Clinton is too eager to use military force.
“I worry about that, yes, I do. I mean I think that … her support for the war in Iraq was not just an aberration,” he said.
“I think that her willingness to kind of push President Obama to overthrow Gaddafi and lead to the kind of instability that we’re seeing now in Libya, not inconsistent with her other views on Syria where she wants a no-fly zone, which I think can suck us into never-ending conflict in that area.”
Sanders said there are other ways to deal with crises.
“These are terrible, brutal dictators,” he said.
“But our job is to think what happens the day after these people are removed, the kind of instability that occurs.”
