Obama tells Fallon: I’m worried about the Republican Party

President Obama said he’s concerned over the future of the party he hopes to keep out of the White House.

“The truth is actually I am worried about the Republican Party,” Obama told Jimmy Fallon on “The Tonight Show” in an interview scheduled to air Thursday night.

{mosads}Obama said the country works with two parties that are “serious and trying to solve problems.”

“And they’ve got philosophical differences and they have fierce debates and they argue and they contest elections,” he said. “But at the end of the day, what you want is a healthy two-party system.”

The president said the Republican presidential nominee should be someone who can do the job, understands the issues at hand, and “ultimately can still move the country forward.”

“But what’s happened in that party culminating in this current nomination, I think is not actually good for the country as a whole,” Obama said.

“It’s not something Democrats should wish for. And my hope is, is that maybe once you get through this cycle, there’s some corrective action and they get back to being a center-right party. And Democratic Party being a center-left party. And we start figuring how to work together.”

The president has had harsh words for presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump in the past. Earlier this month, he slammed Trump’s argument that international trade and immigration have hurt American workers. He also criticized the presumptive GOP nominee’s tax plan and called his pledge to roll back regulations under his Wall Street reform law “crazy.”
