Dem rep: Trump ‘just lost the Latino vote’

A Democratic lawmaker on Thursday slammed Donald Trump, saying the presumptive Republican presidential nominee “just lost the Latino vote.”

“This is a sham and it’s an embarrassment, and I’ll tell you, Donald Trump just lost the Latino vote all across America for Republicans,” Rep. Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.), a member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, said on CNN’s “New Day.”

{mosads}Luján, who endorsed presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, criticized Trump for his comments that an Indiana-born judge overseeing lawsuits against Trump University may be biased against him because of the judge’s Mexican heritage.

Trump on Tuesday issued a statement saying his comments had been misconstrued, noting he doesn’t think a person’s “heritage makes them incapable of being impartial.” He noted that he had been treated unfairly in the case surrounding Trump University and said he felt “justified in questioning whether” he was getting a fair trial.

Luján said Thursday that Americans would not face similar attacks from Democrats.

“We want to make sure the American people know that we have their back, whether you’re a woman, a millennial, African American or a Latino,” he said on CNN.

“We want to make sure that the people all across the country know that we have their back, especially in the face of Donald Trump attacking Judge Curiel, a federal judge born in Indiana, again with the most racist remarks that we’ve seen to date.”
