Trump on terrorism: ‘We’re going to lead our lives’
Donald Trump on Tuesday vowed that America’s national anxiety over terrorism would disappear under his leadership.
“We’re going to stop it folks,” the GOP’s de facto presidential nominee said during a campaign rally in Greensboro, N.C.
{mosads}“We are going to be so straight-down-the-middle in terms of justice. But we’re not going to let people take advantage of us. We’re going to go to the movie theater, we’re going to go to the airport, but we’re going to lead our lives.”
Trump said President Obama’s tenure had drastically eroded voters’ trust in their country’s safety and security.
“We can’t continue to live this way. If you feel safer now than you did eight years ago, I think there’s probably nobody in this room that feels that way.”
Trump claimed that a major factor for current unease is Obama’s handling of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
“The Middle East has been totally destabilized,” he said of Obama’s foreign policy. “What happened? We got ISIS out of the deal.”
“We’ve spent probably $15 trillion over the last four years in the Middle East,” the billionaire added. “We build a school and it gets blown up again and again. We’re flat broke.
“Who has the oil folks? ISIS has the oil. They cannot believe how lucky they got. If I get elected, they’re not going to be so lucky anymore.”
Obama earlier Tuesday angrily rejected Trump’s assessment of his handling of the battle against extremist groups like ISIS. He aimed particular vitriol at Trump’s repeated calls for a temporary ban on Muslims entering the U.S.
“This is a country founded on basic freedoms, including freedom of religion,” he said. “We don’t have religious tests here.
“If we ever abandon those values, we would not only make it easier to radicalize people here and around the world, but we would have betrayed the very things we are trying to protect. I will not let that happen.”
