Maryland’s GOP gov distances from Trump on Muslims

Republican Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan on Tuesday distanced himself from Donald Trump’s response to the Orlando shooting. 

{mosads}”I don’t know what his position is,” Hogan said when asked about Trump’s plan to bar Muslim immigrants from entering the U.S. in the wake of Sunday’s nightclub shooting in Orlando. 

“I don’t care about Donald Trump. I don’t listen to Donald Trump,” Hogan added, according to The Washington Post.

The governor shifted the conversation to his concerns about accepting Syrian refugees in Maryland. 

“I said that we wanted to make sure that proper vetting was done and that background checks were done before refugees came in, and the FBI said at that time they weren’t about to do it,” Hogan said. 

“We asked the federal government for assurances, and we never got it, and nothing’s happened since then.” 

Following the mass shooting in Orlando, Trump, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee, called again for a ban on Muslims entering the U.S. despite opposition from fellow Republicans, including Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.).

Hogan often deflects questions about Trump, including one last week about whether he was fit to be president.
