Sessions: ‘I think we’re going to get unity’

Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) said on Sunday that he expects the Republican Party to come together around presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump.

“I think we’re going to get unity,” Sessions, a Trump supporter, said on “Fox News Sunday.”

{mosads}In recent weeks, several Republican leaders have raised questions about Trump’s comments while others have said they don’t plan to support their party’s presumptive nominee.

Trump in response said he may have to “do it alone,” calling on Republicans to “get tougher.”

Sessions on Sunday defended Trump and had some advice for Republican leaders.

“They need to look at the election returns; they need to understand that the American people are not happy with the gridlock in America,” he said.

The senator detailed Americans’ frustrations and called on the government to work to address the issues.

“They’re not happy their wages have fallen since 2000 steadily. They’re not happy that we have high unemployment. They’re not happy that we have an open border and lawlessness at our border. They believe we should have a lawful system of immigration that serves their interests. They don’t believe these trade deals have worked for them,” he said.

“So I think our leaders on both sides need to be considering what the American people are saying in this election, and they need to be a part of the unity, too.”

Sessions said Republican leaders should be listening to what the American people want and working toward fixing these issues.

“I think there’s a lot of things that we need to learn from the American people,” Sessions said.
