Trump: I won’t limit gun sales
Donald Trump on Monday said he would not regulate the sale of specific gun models should he become president.
“On the guns, I wouldn’t because again, it’s a question of protection,” he told host Bill O’Reilly on Fox News’s “The O’Reilly Factor.” “And also, once you start, where do you end? Where do you end?”
{mosads}Trump said he is disinterested in capping the number of rounds of ammunition particular guns can hold.
“Well, the big guns, first of all, are the same guns the enemy has, and that people that can break into your home or do what this maniac did over the weekend,” he said, referencing last week’s mass shooting in Orlando, Fla.
“And the big guns are the same guns,” the GOP’s presumptive presidential nominee added. “I mean, you’re going to have to have that.
“[People] mostly use them for recreation, Bill. … My sons are in the [National Rifle Association]. So am I. People use them for recreation.”
Trump said he remains committed to keeping people on federal terrorist watchlists from buying guns, however.
“Absolutely,” he said when asked if he backs that measure. “Who would not agree with that? The watchlist to me is very important.”
Forty-nine people were killed and 53 more were injured when a gunman opened fire on June 12 at Pulse nightclub in Orlando. Shooter Omar Mateen, 29, also died during a battle with responding police.
The carnage has reignited national debate over gun control, with advocates saying stricter rules would prevent future tragedies.
Critics counter that tightening firearms regulations would hurt the right to bear arms guaranteed by the Second Amendment.
The Senate on Monday rejected four separate gun control measures in the wake of the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.
Two measures dealt with expanding background checks and two sought to prevent people on terrorist watchlists from buying guns.
