Poll: 37 percent view Pence as good VP pick

About 37 percent of registered voters view presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump’s running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, as an “excellent” or “pretty good” choice, according to a new Gallup poll.

The poll out Monday found that another 45 percent said the Indiana governor’s selection was “only fair” or “poor.”

{mosads}Among registered Republicans, two-thirds call Pence an “excellent” or “pretty good choice” for vice president, and just 5 percent call him a “poor” choice. 

Still, Pence is largely unknown, according to the poll.

Only 39 percent of registered voters said they had an opinion of the Indiana governor — with 21 percent viewing him favorably and 18 percent viewing him unfavorably. Another 18 percent said they had no opinion of Pence, and 44 percent have never heard of him. 

About three-quarters of registered voters say adding Pence to the ticket will not influence their likelihood of voting for Trump. The poll found that 14 percent said it will make them more likely to vote for Trump, and 10 percent said it will make them less likely.

Less than half of voters said Pence is qualified to be president and 33 percent said the Indiana governor is not qualified to serve as president if it becomes necessary.

The poll was conducted from July 15 to 16 among 901 registered voters. The margin of error is 4 percentage points.
