Ohio GOP chairman: Trump’s campaign chief ‘still has a lot to learn’

Ohio’s Republican Party chairman is firing back at Donald Trump’s campaign chairman for slamming Ohio Gov. John Kasich, straining party unity as the Republican National Convention opens in Cleveland.

“[Paul] Manafort still has a lot to learn about Ohio politics. Doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Hope he can do better,” Matt Borges tweeted Monday morning.

{mosads}The state party boss was responding to an attack Manafort made on Kasich during an earlier appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

Manafort said Kasich is “making a big mistake” by refusing to appear at the convention to support the party’s presumptive presidential nominee.

“He’s hurting his state. He’s embarrassing his state, frankly,” Manafort said.

“Most of the Republicans who aren’t coming are people who have been part of the past. People who are part of the future of the Republican Party are, frankly, going to be here participating in the program,” Manafort added.

Borges defended Kasich against Manafort’s comments.

“Ohio loves our governor,” he tweeted. “He turned this state around and united Ohioans. No wonder he has a 60% approval rating.”

Reached by telephone after his tweets Monday, Borges told The Hill that Manafort needed to correct his statement.

“It’s actually just incorrect,” he said.

“Realize that, correct it, and we’ll move forward,” he added when asked what Manafort could do to improve party unity following the Kasich attack.
