Poll: Trump within striking distance of Clinton
Donald Trump remains on Hillary Clinton’s heels as the Republican National Convention begins, according to a new poll.
Clinton, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, leads Trump by 2 points nationwide in a Morning Consult survey released Monday.
{mosads}Clinton earns 41 percent to her GOP counterpart’s 39 percent, while 20 percent remain undecided.
Clinton’s lead grows when libertarian presidential nominee Gary Johnson enters the fray.
She grabs 38 percent in that scenario, versus 35 percent for Trump and 11 percent for Johnson. Another 15 percent are undecided.
Morning Consult conducted its latest sampling of 2,002 voters via interviews from July 14-16. It has a 2 percent margin of error.
Trump trailed Clinton by 1 point in the previous edition of the survey, released last week. Clinton earned 42 percent to Trump’s 41 percent, while 18 percent were undecided.
A Monday poll from Monmouth University showed Trump ahead of Clinton as he gets set for this week’s Republican National Convention, held in Cleveland.
The poll found Trump had cut Clinton’s lead in half over the past month, with Clinton holding a lead of 43 percent to 40 percent over Trump among registered voters. She’s ahead by about 3 points nationwide in the latest RealClearPolitics average of polls.
