Major GOP donor picks Clinton over Trump
A Republican donor on Tuesday announced he is supporting Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump in the presidential race.
“[Trump] does not embody the values that have made me a lifelong Republican,” former MGM CEO Harry Sloan said in a statement, according to Politico.
{mosads}“He is unprepared and temperamentally unfit to be our president,” he said of the GOP presidential nominee. “Most of my Republican friends feel the same way. As a businessman, a father and a conservative it is clear to me Hillary Clinton is the right choice in this election.”
Sloan also said he would probably not back Clinton, the Democratic presidential nominee, if any other Republican were running.
“If we had a different Republican presidential candidate this year, I would likely be proudly supporting them.”
Politico said Sloan previously endorsed John Kasich before the Ohio governor suspended his Oval Office bid in May.
Sloan served on national finance campaigns for former GOP presidential nominees John McCain and Mitt Romney. He is also on the board of trustees for the McCain Institute, a think tank founded by the Arizona senator.
Politico added that Sloan’s support for Clinton actually began with a campaign donation earlier this summer.
Sloan cut a $33,400 check for a Clinton joint-fundraising account on June 30, according to campaign finance records.
Several prominent Republicans have publicly endorsed Clinton over Trump in recent weeks.
Lezlee Westine, an aide to former President George W. Bush, on Monday revealed she would back Clinton over Trump.
Meg Whitman, a former Hewlett-Packard executive and another top GOP donor, announced last week she had reached the same decision.
