Hillary Clinton chastised Donald Trump for his assertion on Tuesday that gun owners could take action against her, accusing him of “inciting” violence.
“Words matter, my friends. And if you are running to be president or you are president of the United States, words can have tremendous consequences,” she told supporters at a Wednesday rally in Des Moines, Iowa.
{mosads}She tied the comment to a number of controversial statements the GOP presidential nominee has made during his campaign, including the recent flap over his criticism of the family of a fallen American Muslim soldier, referred to as a Gold Star family for the military designation for a fallen soldier.
“Yesterday we witnessed the latest in the long line of casual comments from Donald Trump that cross the line. His casual cruelty to a Gold Star family, his casual suggestion that more countries should have nuclear weapons. And now his casual inciting of violence,” the Democratic presidential nominee said.
“Every single one of these incidents shows us that Donald Trump simply does not have the temperament to be president and commander in chief.”
Trump made the controversial comment during a Tuesday rally in North Carolina while talking about Clinton appointing liberal justices that could back gun control legislation.
“If she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do, folks,” he said.
“Although the Second Amendment people, maybe there is. I don’t know.”
Democrats immediately pounced on the comments, accusing him of calling for violence against their party’s nominee. But Trump’s campaign and his allies pushed back and argued he only meant political recourse, not violence.
The Secret Service spoke to Trump about the issue, according to CNN.
