Hillary Clinton says that if Ronald Reagan were alive to watch Donald Trump at the NBC News forum Wednesday night, the former president would be shaking his head in dismay.
“I was just thinking about all of the presidents that would just be looking at one another in total astonishment,” Clinton told reporters on Thursday morning, referring to Trump’s controversial comments about U.S. generals, Russia and Middle East oil at the forum.
{mosads}“What would Ronald Reagan say about a Republican nominee who attacks America’s generals and heaps praise on Russia’s president? I think we know the answer.”
Clinton’s Reagan line of attack parrots a Democratic Party talking point of the day and fits with Clinton’s strategy of driving mainstream Republicans away from Trump.
On Thursday morning, Democrats blasted out a video showing Reagan’s adult children lashing out at Trump.
Clinton, the Democratic presidential nominee, made her comments at a press conference on the tarmac at Westchester, N.Y., in front her of campaign airplane adorned with her “Stronger Together” slogan.
She hammered Trump for trashing U.S. generals — Trump said Wednesday night that they’d been reduced to “rubble” under President Obama — and she portrayed the GOP nominee’s plan for taking Middle East oil as absurd.
But it was Trump’s relatively warm words for Putin that Clinton latched onto with the most relish.
“Bizarrely, once again, he praised Russia’s strongman Vladimir Putin, even taking the astonishing step of suggesting that he prefers the Russian president to our American president,” she said.
“That is not just unpatriotic … it is scary. Because it suggests that he will let Putin do whatever Putin wants to do.”
