The pastor who interrupted Donald Trump during a church speech in Flint, Mich., is defending her decision, saying the GOP presidential nominee was straying from the planned discussion topic.
{mosads}”They had plans to make it a little more than they originally said, and I said, ‘No, you’re going to stick to the original plan,’ ” Rev. Faith Green Timmons said Thursday, according to a video posted by Mic.
“And so when he asked to come in to make a statement and the statement began to go beyond what he originally said, I asked him to stick to what he said. You came here to welcome our workers and thank them for what they have done and that’s what he stuck to.”
Timmons said the church is an “open church” and all are invited to partake.
“When I heard from the Trump camp that they wanted to come by and see that we give out water, we give out foods that help mitigate lead and asked if he could come — all are welcome,” she said. “It’s a public event.”
Timmons said she thought the church represented Flint well. She also criticized some of the statements Trump has made about certain groups of people.
“I wanted him to see the best of Flint in the sense that we’re an educated congregation,” she said.
“Some of the statements that I’ve heard him make about African-Americans, Mexicans and others were degrading. I wanted him to see intelligent people, loving people, caring people, who have done well with the resources that they had.”
On Wednesday, the pastor interrupted Trump to stop him from attacking Hillary Clinton during a speech at Bethel United Methodist Church in Flint.
During the speech, Trump said Clinton had failed on the economy and foreign policy. The pastor interrupted Trump and made clear she invited him “to thank us … not to give a political speech.”
Trump on Thursday criticized the pastor, saying “something was up” and calling her a “nervous mess.”
