Hillary Clinton framed her recent pneumonia diagnosis and break from the campaign trail as a wake-up call that reminded her why she’s running for president.
“I certainly feel lucky — when I am under the weather, I can afford to take a few days off. Millions of Americans can’t. They either go to work sick or they lose a paycheck,” she told the crowd in Greensboro, N.C.
“They toss back some Tylenols, chug some orange juice and hope the cough or the virus goes away on its own.”
{mosads}Clinton, the Democratic presidential nominee, said that being off of the trail helped her sit with her thoughts and “reconnect with what this whole campaign is about.”
“I have met so many people living on a razor’s edge, one illness away from losing their job, one paycheck away from losing their job,” she said.
“That goes against everything we stand for as Americans, because some things should not come down to luck.”
Clinton appeared to be back in form as she sought to leave her recent illness in the rearview mirror, days after video of her stumbling into a van after a 9/11 memorial ceremony went viral. The video prompted concerns about Clinton’s health and sparked Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s allies to criticize her for keeping the diagnosis secret from the American people.
Clinton said she had tried to “power through it, but even I had to admit that maybe a few days of rest would do me good.
“I’m not great at taking it easy even under ordinary circumstances, but with two months to go until Election Day, sitting at home was pretty much the last place I wanted to be,” she said.
