Priebus, Christie helping Trump prep for debate
Donald Trump turned to two top advisers to help him prepare for the town hall-style presidential debate on Sunday.
{mosads}Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie met with the Republican presidential nominee to bombard him with questions that he could be asked during his second face-off with Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, The Washington Post reported Friday.
Priebus prepped Trump with waves of rapid-fire questions, while Christie acted as a Trump antagonist.
Other top campaign officials coached the GOP nominee on body language, likely debate scenarios and political talking points, the report notes.
“Christie is taking the lead on this, and that gives me some relief,” former Trump campaign adviser Michael Caputo told the Post. “You don’t see any better puncher and counter-puncher than Chris Christie.”
Christie, however, has publicly denied helping Trump prepare for the second debate in the past.
“I have not been asked to do anything new, and as far as I know, there is no new debate prep scheduled,” Christie said a few weeks ago.
The meetings between Trump, Christie and Priebus were also said to be informal and did not include actual mock debate sessions.
“He doesn’t like rehearsing and rehearsing,” said Rudy Giuliani, a former New York City mayor and another top adviser to Trump. “The way he wants to do a test run is by doing a real test run.”
Former Fox News Chairman Roger Ailes was also not present during the preparation sessions after reportedly playing a large role in coaching Trump for the first debate.
The town hall debate between Trump and Clinton will air on Sunday and will be moderated by CNN’s Anderson Cooper and ABC News’s Martha Raddatz.
