RNC official: No meeting on Trump alternative

Sean Spicer, the communications director for the Republican National Committee, shot down a report on Friday night that GOP officials were convening to discuss what a path forward would look like without nominee Donald Trump.

“Your sources are wrong. There is no meeting,” he said on Twitter.

{mosads}His comments come after a New York Times reporter said that a source told her that GOP officials were meeting “to discuss what options the party has going forward in case Trump isn’t the nominee.”

Yamiche Alcindor, the Times reporter, added that, according to the source, “RNC officials likely can’t oust Trump from the ticket and that Trump would likely have to quit on his own.”

The speculation that Trump could step down is part of the growing fallout from 2005 audio published on Friday by The Washington Post published. In the recording, the businessman makes explicit comments about trying to have sex with women, which were caught on a hot mic.

Trump issued a half-apology, saying the comments were private “locker-room banter” and “I apologize if anyone was offended.”

GOP lawmakers and top party officials have disavowed Trump’s remarks, but stopped short of dropping their support for the party’s nominee roughly a month before the presidential election.

RNC Chairman Reince Priebus said on Friday that “no woman should ever be described in these terms or talked about in this manner. Ever.”

Trump announced on Friday that instead of appearing in Wisconsin on Saturday with House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), he will instead spend the day in New York doing debate prep with Priebus, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Sen. Jeff Sessions.

Trump is facing off against Hillary Clinton on Sunday for the second presidential debate.
