Major GOP donors sticking with Trump
GOP megadonors Robert and Rebekah Mercer said they are sticking by presidential nominee Donald Trump as other Republicans abandon him over his offensive comments about women.
{mosads}In a statement to the Washington Post, the Mercers said that if Trump acted like Hillary Clinton — hitting her for her paid speeches and negotiations with Russia — they may abandon Trump.
And in an attack on former President Bill Clinton, they wrote that if Trump had “serially terrorized and silenced the victims of violent sexual assault whom he feared could damage his political career, we would most definitely be rethinking our support for him.”
The Mercers wrote that the media looked away from Bill Clinton’s affairs and allegations of sexual assault.
But they said they weren’t surprised about Trump’s comments that surfaced Friday, and called out the media’s “faux outrage.”
“We are completely indifferent to Mr. Trump’s locker room braggadocio,” they wrote.
“We have a country to save and there is only one person who can save it. We, and Americans across the country and around the world, stand steadfastly behind Donald J. Trump.”
Rebekah Mercer heads a pro-Trump super-PAC Make America Number 1, and the family is believed to have played a role in the Trump campaign shake-up that brought on Steve Bannon and Kellyanne Conway.
