Gary Johnson: ‘Bernie was right’ on Clinton

Libertarian presidential nominee Gary Johnson says Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) got the better of Hillary Clinton during their Democratic presidential primary.

“Bernie was right,” Johnson said in an online campaign ad released Friday. “Hillary is out of touch.

{mosads}”So if Hillary wants to know why the independents and millennials are not supporting her campaign, how about she take a look at her stand on the issues?” he continued.

Johnson argued he is resonating with both demographics because he is more closely aligned with Sanders than Clinton.

“They supported [Sanders] because he opposed the wars that they oppose, just as I do,” Johnson said.

“They supported Bernie Sanders because he rejects the crony capitalism that has become a way of life in Washington, D.C.,” he continued. “I rejected cronyism as governor, and I reject it now.

“Sen. Sanders is one of the few politicians who tells the truth about the war on drugs and isn’t afraid to agree with the majority of Americans about ending marijuana prohibition. I’ve been there for 17 years myself, leading the fight.”

Johnson accused Clinton of being “the poster child for crony capitalism.”

“Her entire life has been about the government favoring the rich and picking winners and losers. She is against [marijuana] legalization. The poll numbers are just not high enough for her, I guess,” he said.

Sanders endorsed Clinton in July after suspending his own White House bid. He has since hit the campaign trail for Clinton and vowed to help elect her over GOP rival Donald Trump.

Clinton leads Trump by nearly 7 points nationwide, according to the latest RealClearPolitics average of polls.

Johnson and his running mate Bill Weld register around 7 percent support nationally in the index.
