Giuliani to host NY fundraiser for Christie

Rudy Giuliani will host a fundraiser this month for New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s (R) reelection campaign.

New York’s former mayor, who ran for president in 2008, will host the fundraiser along with a number of former ambassadors in Southampton, N.Y.

The New York Republican Party posted an invitation to the gathering on Friday, which will also be hosted by John Loeb, former ambassador to Denmark under President Reagan.

Christie is expected to coast to reelection later this year, and is seen as a likely presidential candidate in 2016.

There are some parallels between Giuliani and Christie.

Both are centrist Republicans elected in places where their party has had a tough time in presidential contests. Both also are viewed with some suspicion on the right.

Christie positioned himself as a mainstream candidate who can win in a speech Thursday at the National Republican Committee’s summer meeting, though he made no overt mention of the 2016 presidential election.

He has recently picked fights with more libertarian-leaning Republicans like Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), who is also a potential GOP contender.

Some observers have compared Christie to Giuliani unflatteringly. While Giuliani was seen as the early front-runner in 2008’s presidential race — much the same way Christie is seen today — he failed to win any primary state before ending his campaign.
