Bloomberg to headline fundraiser for Reid
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg (I) is set to host a fundraiser for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) in September.
Ira Stoll has a copy of the invitation, which lists Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) as one of the guests. The event will take place in Bloomberg’s home in New York Sept. 20. Tickets for the event start at $1,000 — raising $10,000 gets a donor billing as an event “chair.”
Bloomberg and Reid are a bit of an odd pair, given that Reid recently broke with President Obama on his support for a planned Islamic center and mosque near Ground Zero in New York. Reid became the most prominent Democrat to say the project should be built somewhere else.
Bloomberg is one of the project’s strongest defenders and has assailed opponents of the plan. Earlier this month, he said those who spoke out against the project should be “ashamed.”
Bloomberg has endorsed and held fundraising events for both Republicans and Democrats this cycle. He is backing Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) and Rep. Joe Sestak (D-Pa.) in their Senate races. He is also supporting the Senate bids of Reps. Mike Castle (R-Del.) and Mark Kirk (R-Ill.).
