Cornyn: ‘Angle’s going to win that race’

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) said Nevada Republican Sharron Angle will win in November but predicted the GOP wouldn’t reclaim the Senate majority.

“Sharron Angle’s going to win that race, I’ll make that prediction right here, right now,” Cornyn, who chairs the National Republican Senatorial Committee, said Sunday on Fox News. “I think she’s going to win because of the huge enthusiasm gap between Republicans and Democrats.”

Angle is challenging Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (Nev.). Polls show the candidates in a statistical tie going into the final two weeks of the campaign.

Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) agreed Reid is in a “tough race.”

“When you’re the leader of the party in power during very tough economic times, you pay a high price for that,” McCaskill said. “He’s a nice guy who’s had a really tough job.”

Still, McCaskill pointed out some Nevada Republicans were endorsing Reid out of concerns about Angle. “The Republicans that know Sharron Angle in Nevada are saying, ‘No, no, we can’t send that to Washington. We can’t send her to Washington.'”

Cornyn wasn’t bullish about his party’s chances of reclaiming the Senate majority.

”We’re going to fight for every seat we can possibly get,” he said. “We have 12 seats in play, it’s a theoretical pathway there. But I’m not predicting we’re going to get back the majority. It may be a two cycle process.”

Cornyn also predicted Republican Linda McMahon would defeat Democrat Richard Blumenthal in the Connecticut Senate race.

“I’m predicting that as an upset,” he said.

McCaskill, meanwhile, said Kentucky could turn out to be a surprise win for the Democrats.

“I think that the people of Kentucky know that Jack Conway is common sense and he’s a moderate, and I look forward to him being part of our moderate caucus in the Democratic Party,” she said.
