Fiorina hospitalized in California; campaign events canceled

California Senate candidate Carly Fiorina (R) has been hospitalized after coming down with an infection related to her battle with cancer.

After being successfully treated for breast cancer, Fiorina had reconstructive surgery over the summer. While she remains cancer free, the reconstructive surgery caused an infection to develop, according to her campaign.

“This morning Carly came down with an infection associated with the reconstructive surgery and, as a result, she was admitted to the hospital to receive antibiotics to treat this infection,” Deborah Bowker, Fiorina’s chief of staff, said in a statement. “While this will impact her campaign schedule today, Carly is upbeat and her doctors expect her to make a quick and full recovery and be back out on the campaign trail soon.”

A week to go before Election Day, Fiorina is locked in a tight race with Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), and time is of the essence.

“Carly is looking forward to getting back to her full campaign schedule and to defeating Barbara Boxer on November 2,” Bowker added. She did not specify when Fiorina would be released from the hospital.

Boxer’s campaign wished her a “speedy recovery.”

“We wish Carly Fiorina a speedy recovery and hope she is able to return
to her normal schedule soon,” Rose Kapolczynski, Boxer’s campaign
manager, said in a statement.
