Liberal darlings Warren, Baldwin set up joint fundraising group

Liberal darlings Elizabeth Warren and Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) have joined forces to raise money for their Senate campaigns, according to Federal Election Commission documents.

The Massachusetts Wisconsin Victory Fund appeared on the commission’s site Wednesday morning as a joint fundraising committee. Elizabeth for MA, Inc. and Tammy Baldwin for Senate will reap the benefits of the committee’s fundraising.

{mosads}Both candidates are favorites of national liberal activists for their populist progressive views and rhetoric. Joining forces could help broaden both of their fundraising bases by connecting liberal activists nationwide.

Baldwin, long a champion for liberal causes, would be the first openly gay senator. Warren is known as a strong consumer advocate, and helped to set up the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Congress approved legislation creating the bureau as part of its Wall Street reform bill in 2010.

Warren is gearing up for her Senate campaign against freshman Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.), Democrats’ top target of the cycle, while Baldwin is running for retiring Sen. Herb Kohl’s (D-Wis.) seat. She is likely to face the winner of a Republican primary between former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson and former Rep. Mark Neumann (Wis.), who is running to Thompson’s right in the primary.

The group’s treasurer is Judy Zamore, a longtime Democratic finance fixture who in 2006 worked on the election of another populist Democrat, Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), and now is a principal at Capitol Compliance Associates, which helps candidates ensure they remain in compliance with Federal Election Commission rules.

Neither campaign could be reached for immediate comment.

In a joint fundraising committee, “fundraising [is] conducted jointly by a political committee and one or more other political committees or unregistered organizations,” according to the commission’s website.
