Poll: Cornyn crushing Stockman in Texas

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) has a huge lead over Rep. Steve Stockman (R-Texas), his newly announced primary foe, according to a new survey conducted by GOP pollster Wilson Perkins Allen Research.

Cornyn leads Stockman by 50 percent to 6 percent, according to the poll. Other candidates pull a combined 5 percent; 39 percent remain undecided.

{mosads}Stockman was a surprise entrant in the race earlier this week and needs to hold Cornyn to less than 50 percent of the vote to force a runoff in the early March primary. He has little funding for his campaign and — as the poll shows — isn’t well-known across the state. Cornyn has $7 million in the bank and looks like he’ll be in strong shape.

Pollster Chris Perkins, who isn’t working for either candidate, added the poll to a corporate survey he was conducting in the state. His clients include Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott (R), who’s running for governor.

“With less than three months until the Republican Primary for United States Senate, John Cornyn is in a very strong position,” he says in a poll memo, obtained by The Hill.

The live-called poll of 762 likely Republican primary voters was conducted from Dec. 10-12 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.6 percentage points.
