Libertarian Sarvis plans run for Virginia Senate

Libertarian Robert Sarvis plans to run against Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.), launching a bid less than three months after playing the spoiler role in Virginia’s gubernatorial race.

“I finally got the go-ahead from my wife and told the Libertarian Party folks that I am going to run,” Sarvis told the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

{mosads}Sarvis took 6.5 percent against Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D) and Republican nominee Ken Cuccinelli (R) in their 2013 race. Strategists believe a number of Republicans and independents uncomfortable with Cuccinelli’s social positions backed him in a protest vote.

Warner is likely to face former Republican National Committee Chairman Ed Gillespie in the general election. Early polls have found Warner with a comfortable lead in the race.
