Franken jokes: ‘I’ve just been impeccable’

Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) said in an interview broadcast Sunday that the comedian in him would be hard pressed to mock his record during his first term as a senator in Washington.

“I’ve just been impeccable,” he joked on ABC’s “This Week” during an interview as he campaigned for reelection in rural Minnesota. “I’ve made some small mistakes, I suppose.”

The Minnesota Democrat said he’s been selective in using humor during hearings and on the Senate floor.

“Will I crack wise? Sure,” he said. “That’s who I am.”

“I was always a serious person,” he added.

The senator, who rose to prominence on “Saturday Night Live,” won his Senate election by 312 votes. “I think I felt that I wanted to prove to all Minnesotans that I was going to work for them,” he said of those results.

Franken said he is now “very comfortable” running as a Democrat during President Obama’s second term.

The of rollout ObamaCare was “pretty disastrous,” he said, however, adding that parts of the healthcare reform law need “fixed.”

The senator, who keeps a low profile in Washington and generally avoids the press, has become a visible and vocal force when it comes to merger deals like the one now being proposed by Comcast.

He opposed the company’s 2011 purchase of NBC and is now waging a one-man crusade against Comcast’s proposed merger with Time Warner Cable in hearings, letters and television appearances.
