New ad hits Sullivan as ‘not from Alaska’

The super-PAC backing Sen. Mark Begich (D-Alaska) released its first attack of the general election, ripping GOP Senate candidate Dan Sullivan less than 24 hours after his primary victory.

The ad targets Sullivan, the former Alaska Natural Resources Department head, for his roots outside Alaska and his support for a controversial local mining project that some critics say could hurt commercial fishing.

{mosads}”There’s two things you need to know about Dan Sullivan: He’s not from Alaska and he supports the Pebble Mine,” says fisherman Mike Sparks in the ad.“I do support mining and I do support fishing but I won’t trade one industry for the other.

“I just don’t trust Dan Sullivan to make good decisions for Alaska,” Sparks adds.

Sullivan won his primary Tuesday night, setting up a key battle as Democrats fight to hold on to the Senate in November.

Most expect the race to be close, though Republicans privately concede that the attacks from Put Alaska First, the group behind the ad has already done damage to Sullivan’s image in the state. The group gets most of its funding from national Democrats.

The contentious Pebble Mine project has split Alaskans. The man who led the charge against Pebble Mine is now a senior Sullivan advisor.
