Cornyn holds on to Senate seat

Republican Sen. John Cornyn of Texas held onto his Senate seat, cruising to victory on Tuesday.

Cornyn, who has been in the Senate since 2002, is planning to run for Senate majority whip, the same jobs he holds in the minority, if Republicans win control of the Senate.

{mosads}He defeated Democrat David Alameel of Dallas, who failed to gain enough momentum to challenge the incumbent.

So far, Republicans have captured three of the six seats they need to flip the upper chamber into their favor.

On Tuesday, Cornyn said he would expect to be second-in-command to now Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), who easily won his race and is in line to take the reins of the upper chamber in a GOP-controlled Senate.

“Well I will, and I look forward to working with the new majority leader, Mitch McConnell,” Cornyn said in an interview on CNN.

With North Carolina, Alaska and New Hampshire among the tight races yet to be called, Cornyn said that “if we pick up two or three of those seats then I think it’s going to be a big wave and a big night.”
