Ariz. Dem eying a McCain challenge?
Rep. Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.) has launched a leadership PAC, fueling speculation that she will run for Senate in the near future.
The Arizona Republic reported on Tuesday that Sinema has formed the Getting Stuff Done PAC, a fundraising move that could signal the second-term lawmaker has ambitions for higher office.
In the 2014 midterm cycle, Sinema considered switching from her competitive 9th District, to the neighboring 7th District, where a far easier race awaited. She stayed in the 9th and cruised to victory during a Republican wave year in a competitive district that only narrowly voted for President Obama in 2012.
Sinema already has more than $300,000 in her campaign war chest, according to Federal Election Commission records.
She has not decided yet whether to run for Senate, but the Arizona Republic report says she could potentially challenge Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) in 2016 or wait until 2018 and challenge Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.).
McCain is a top target for conservative activists this cycle. Two Tea Party lawmakers, Arizona GOP Reps. Matt Salmon and David Schweikert, are seriously considering a primary challenge to McCain.
McCain will begin the 2016 cycle from a position of strength. He’s been raising campaign cash, traveling the state and seeking to block potential challengers on the right by purging libertarian and Tea Party activists from the state party.
