Dems to target Rubio on book tour
The Democratic National Committee on Wednesday will launch a series of attacks against Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) pegged to his visits to early-voting states to promote his new book.
Rubio, who is considering a run for the White House in 2016, has released a new book ahead of a potential presidential run.
{mosads}His American Dreams book tour will take him to several early-voting presidential primary and caucus states in the next few days, including Nevada, South Carolina, New Hampshire and Florida.
For every day that Rubio is on the road, the DNC is planning events, conference calls, statements and email alerts to highlight various aspects of his record.
In Nevada on Wednesday, the DNC will highlight Rubio’s opposition to raising the minimum wage. In South Carolina on Thursday, they’ll turn their attention to Rubio’s opposition to a student loan refinancing bill.
On Friday, in Rubio’s home state of Florida, the DNC will focus on a comment Rubio made in 2011 that some entitlement programs have “weakened us as a people.” In New Hampshire on Monday, the DNC will turn its focus to Rubio’s opposition to the Paycheck Fairness Act.
“Marco Rubio wants to portray himself as a new type of Republican, but we all know Rubio shouldn’t be judged by his cover,” DNC national press secretary Holly Shulman said in a statement. “Rubio has spent his career pushing the same failed GOP policies that the public has already rejected. From his opposition to raising the minimum wage and the Paycheck Fairness Act, to his denigration of Social Security and Medicare, Americans just can’t trust Marco Rubio to fight for them.”
The DNC will also be promoting a fake book cover on social media with the tag line “Restoring Economic Opportunity for Everyone (at the top).”
Rubio is gearing up for a potential run for the White House in 2016, but he’s also a top target for Democrats in their efforts to reclaim the Senate. The perennial battleground state, Florida, could be a must-win for Democrats hoping to win back control of the upper chamber in 2016.
Rubio remains popular at home and he’s young star in the Republican Party. He has said he won’t run for president and reelection to the Senate simultaneously.
Democrats say they’re preparing for the Senate race as if Rubio is in. If Rubio runs for Senate in 2016 he’d be the early favorite to win reelection.
However, Democrats argue that they have a turnout advantage in presidential election years, and they’re in the early stages of vetting potential challengers.
Much of the buzz in Florida’s Democratic circles right now is centered on Rep. Patrick Murphy (D-Fla.), a two-term congressman and rising political star in the state who hails from a competitive district.
Two other more entrenched Democrats in the state — Reps. Alan Grayson and Debbie Wasserman Schultz — are also considering Senate bids.
