McCain: Iran deal shows Dem opponent a ‘rubber stamp’ for Obama

Sen. John McCain’s (R-Ariz.) campaign slammed Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick (D-Ariz.), a potential 2016 opponent, for her their support for President Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran.

Lorna Romero, the communications director for McCain’s reelection campaign, said Kirkpatrick “is proving herself to be a rubber stamp for President Obama’s failed foreign policy — the last thing Arizona and America need in this dangerous world.”

{mosads}Kirkpatrick is one of a handful of Democratic Senate candidates to come out in support of the Iran deal, providing a point of contention with their likely Republican opponents. McCain has been a vocal, and frequent, critic of the agreement.

Kirkpatrick said Wednesday she will back the Iran deal while acknowledging that it “is not perfect, but the United States has an opportunity to lead the world on a historic and critical diplomatic course against danger and chaos.”

“I will support this agreement because it blocks Iran’s path to a nuclear weapon, protects Israel and launches a historic diplomatic agreement that prepares us for the future in an increasingly volatile world,” she added.

Kirkpatrick’s announcement comes as the House is expected to vote on the Iran deal this week.

Romero called Kirkpatrick’s support “dangerous and wrong.”

“This deal threatens America’s national security by paving the way for a legitimized nuclear program for the number-one state sponsor of terrorism in the world,” she added. “Congresswoman Kirkpatrick’s deal rewards Iran with tens of billions of dollars in sanctions relief.”

Senate Republicans, who are defending 24 seats next year, have suggested that they’ll hold Democrats accountable for their votes on the Iran deal.

According to the Pew Research Center, 21 percent of Americans support the agreement, while 49 percent oppose, and 30 percent don’t know their position.

While McCain’s reelection bid is attracting national attention, he’s not considered as vulnerable as a handful of Senate colleagues from blue states.

According to a poll released earlier this year from the Democratic-leaning Public Policy Polling, McCain leads Kirkpatrick in a general election matchup, with nearly a quarter saying they are undecided.
