Poll: Young leads Bayh by 5 points in Indiana Senate race
A new poll shows Republican Todd Young leading his Democratic opponent, Evan Bayh, by 5 points in the Indiana Senate race.
Young leads Bayh 46 percent to 41 percent among likely voters in the WTHR/HPI survey released Friday. Another 6 percent said that they would support Libertarian Lucy Brenton, and 7 percent of voters remain undecided.
{mosads}Young has gained 6 points since September, while Bayh has dropped 3 points, according to the poll.
The survey attributes Bayh’s drop to his favorability rating, which has decreased significantly since the start of his campaign, with major drops in favorability among independents and members of his own party.
Bayh’s favorability among independents fell 23 points in the poll, along with an 11-point decline in net favorability among Democrats.
However, the survey also found the Democrat with a 6-point lead over the Republican in early voting.
Democrats have viewed the Indiana race as an important pickup opportunity as they battle to regain a majority in the Senate. Democrats need to net five seats, or four if they retain the White House, to win a majority in the upper chamber.
The poll of 600 likely Indiana voters was conducted Nov. 1–3 via landlines and cellphones with a margin of error of 4 points.
