Grimes dedicates Senate run to deceased grandmother in new video

{mosads}The video opens with a clip from Grimes’s iconic ad from her run for Kentucky secretary of state that featured her two grandmothers, one of whom passed away shortly after filming the spot.

Grimes says she’s running for her grandmother and characterizes Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) as being “the biggest part of the problem” in Washington.

“Grandmother knew that if you wanted to get something done, you don’t stand in the way,” she says. “You stand by your principles, but you also figure out where you can agree and how we can come together. But that’s not happening in Washington today, and Sen. McConnell is the biggest part of the problem.”

She goes on to hammer McConnell for blocking legislation “out of spite,” and distances herself from President Obama, who is unpopular in the state.

“I don’t always agree with the president, but that doesn’t mean we can’t put the good of our people ahead of the bad that comes from acting petty and small,” she says.

And Grimes’s other grandmother appears at the end of the ad, riffing off of the original “grandmothers” ad.

“What rhymes with Mitch? Time to switch. Let’s get started honey. This one’s for Thelma,” she says at the end, referencing Grimes’s deceased grandmother.

The Web video touts her upcoming campaign kickoff, scheduled for next week. It follows her initial announcement of her intentions to run earlier this month, which Republican critics characterized as a botched rollout and evidence she’s unprepared for the race.

But Democrats believe she’s their best shot at defeating McConnell, who is seen as vulnerable due to polling showing him unpopular in the state.
