Sen. Bennett struggles to be heard at Utah GOP convention

Utah Sen. Bob Bennett (R) made his final pitch to delegates at the state party convention in Salt Lake City Saturday. There was just one problem — almost no one could hear him.

Bennett was the only candidate without a microphone as he pleaded with delegates for another term in office, according to the Deseret News. Delegates had to huddle close to hear his speech over crowd noise.

But the time he found a microphone, Mitt Romney appeared on the convention floor — ostensibly to help the incumbent senator — and delegates swarmed the former Massachusetts governor and left Bennett to finish out his speech.

“I want to do this again because the fire in my belly is burning brighter than ever,” Bennett said. “I yield to no one in my reverence for the Constitution — like Lincoln, I have an oath registered in heaven to uphold and defend it and I turn to it as the first checkpoint when considering any piece of legislation.”

He needs 40 percent of the vote to make it to a June primary and 60 percent of the vote to secure the nomination outright. Mike Lee (R) and Tim Bridgewater (R) are challenging Bennett.
