NRA goes after Bloomberg in campaign

The National Rifle Association on Tuesday launched a six-figure ad buy attacking former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg (I).

The aim is to paint Bloomberg as an out-of-touch “elitist” after he vowed earlier this year to pour $50 million to combat the NRA this election cycle through education and advocacy to reduce gun violence.

{mosads}The initial ad, titled “Insult,” will run on broadcast networks in Colorado and cable television around the country. The Washington Post reported there is $500,000 behind the ad, which is part of multimillion-dollar campaign.

“Liberals call this flyover country. It’s an insult. But nobody insults your life like this guy, Michael Bloomberg — billionaire, elitist, hypocrite,” a female narrator says while driving her truck in a rural location.

The ad goes further than attacking the former mayor on gun control, taking a shot at him for attempting to restrict large soft drinks while mayor.

“Hey Bloomberg, keep your politics in New York,” the narrator goes on.

The ad will accompany a six-figure media campaign in Iowa, Colorado, Louisiana, Nevada, Kentucky, North Carolina and Georgia — a number of which are home to competitive Senate elections this year.

“Our effort will expose Bloomberg as an arrogant hypocrite who thinks he knows best how people should live their lives,” said Chris Cox, executive director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action.
