GOP takeover will top Sunday shows

The new Republican majority in the Senate will dominate the Sunday show lineup following big pickups from the GOP in Tuesday’s election. 

Next year will be the first time in President Obama’s tenure that Republicans control both chambers of Congress. He will discuss his plans for governing during an interview on “CBS’s “Face the Nation.”

After the election, he gathered more than a dozen congressional leaders from both parties for a meeting at the White House to talk about the new dynamic. Two of the participants Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) and Rep. Xavier Becerra (D-Calif.) will sit down with “Fox News Sunday.”

{mosads}A host of newly elected Republican lawmakers will spread out throughout the Sunday shows to talk about the election and plans for the next Congress — from Sen.-elect Cory Gardner (R-Colo.), Sen.-elect Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va) on Fox to Rep.-elect Gwen Graham and Sen.-elect Mike Rounds (R-S.D.). 

There are still several months left in the current Congress, however, the lame-duck session begins next week. 

Sens. John Thune (R-S.D.) and Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) will debate the 1,500 troop increase in Iraq announced Friday as well as Congress’s plans in the next two months, during a segment on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

Obama will likely hit on both subjects as well. 

Finally, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Brown will be asked about his plans for 2016, while former President George W. Bush will also field questions about his brother, Jeb’s potential bid. 

Here is what is coming on Sunday: 

NBC’s “Meet the Press”: Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R), fresh from a reelection victory, will talk about the major GOP pickups from Tuesday. He will also be asked about his 2016 plans. Former House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) will also join the program months after resigning from Congress following his surprising loss in his GOP primary. Newly elected senator elect Mike Rounds (R-S.D.) and Rep.-elect Gwen Graham (D-Fla.) will also appear. 

CBS’s “Face the Nation”: President Obama will be asked about governing in the next Congress, where Republicans will control both chambers. Former President George W. Bush will discuss his new book about his father, and his brother’s potential bid in 2016. 

CNN’s “State of the Union”: Sens. John Thune (R-S.D.) and Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) will discuss the upcoming lame-duck session and the U.S. troop increase in Iraq. Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.) and Reps. Steve Israel (D-N.Y.) and Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) will also join in a segment with newly elected House members, including Brendan Boyle, Carlos Curbelo, Ruben Gallego and Lee Zeldin. 

Fox News Sunday: Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wy.) and Rep. Xavier Becerra (D-Calif.) will be on the show after attending a meeting with Obama that included more than a dozen leaders from both parties. Two Republicans just elected to the Senate will also join — Cory Gardner of Colorado and Shelley Moore Capito on West Virginia. 

ABC’s “This Week”: Fallout from the midterm elections and cybersecurity will lead the program. No lawmaker appearances have been announced.
