GOP lawmaker: Obama immigration actions ‘impeachable offense’
Rep. Matt Salmon (R-Ariz.) said Friday that President Obama’s executive actions on immigration would be an impeachable offense.
Salmon noted that conservative commentator Charles Krauthammer has already made that point.
{mosads}Asked if he thought it would be an impeachable offense, he said: “Well Charles Krauthammer was asked that same question I think, just recently on one of the news programs, and I have to agree with him, of course it would be.”
“But committing an impeachable offense and getting the two-thirds in the Senate to convict are two different stories,” he added. “So, I mean, we have to play the hand that we are dealt right now.”
Salmon made the remarks on Newsmax TV on Friday. They were first flagged by BuzzFeed.
Salmon has circulated a letter calling for language to be included in an appropriations bill blocking funding from immigration actions.
Another Republican lawmaker, Rep. Joe Barton (R-Texas), has also raised the prospect of impeachment over immigration action by Obama.
