Ginsburg undergoes heart procedure

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg had a stent placed in her right coronary artery on Wednesday to address a blockage.

{mosads}She is “resting comfortably,” according to a statement, and is likely to be discharged within two days.

The issue was discovered when Ginsburg, 81, experienced discomfort while exercising.

Ginsburg has experienced health problems before. She underwent treatment for colon cancer in 1999 but didn’t miss a day on the bench. In 2009, she had surgery for pancreatic cancer that was caught early.

Some liberals have called on Ginsburg to step down so she could be replaced by a younger justice who holds her values, but she has said she has no intention of resigning her seat in the near future.

“If I resign any time this year, [President Obama] could not successfully appoint anyone I would like to see in the court,” she told Elle magazine in September, noting that Republicans in the Senate could filibuster her replacement if he or she were seen as too liberal.
