Obamas volunteer at food bank

President Obama, accompanied by first lady Michelle Obama, his daughters and mother-in-law, marked the day before Thanksgiving by helping feed the hungry in Washington.

The Obamas traveled to Bread for the City in southeast Washington to distribute food, with the president handing out bags of sweet potatoes.

Malia, 16, also joined the family, and her grandmother, Marion Robinson, distributed fresh baked bread to a line of people that stretched outside of the room, according to press reports.

“How are you?” President Obama asked some of the individuals. “Nice to see you.”

According to Bread for the City’s website, the group aims to “provide food, clothing, medical care and legal and social services” for vulnerable residents of Washington.

Earlier Wednesday, Obama participated in the White House tradition of pardoning a turkey before Thanksgiving.

“I know some will call this amnesty, but don’t worry, there is plenty of turkey to go around,” said Obama, poking fun at critics of his executive actions on immigration.
