Ex-Va. first lady gets 366 days for corruption
Maureen McDonnell, former first lady of Virginia, was sentenced Friday to a one year and one day sentence after a federal corruption probe caught her and her husband peddling influence in exchange for gifts.
{mosads}Bob and Maureen McDonnell were convicted on corruption charges in September for accepting a Rolex watch, use of a Ferrari, paid vacations and more perks from wealthy businessman Jonnie R. Williams Sr., who wanted them to promote his dietary supplement.
Former Gov. Bob McDonnell (R), who earlier received a two-year sentence, is appealing his conviction. His estranged wife is likely to do the same.
Judge James R. Spencer called the case “tragic, sad and puzzling” during the sentencing, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
“Even with all the information I have it’s difficult to get to the heart of who Mrs. McDonnell really is,” he added.
In a statement to the judge ahead of the sentencing, McDonnell called Williams a “serpent.”
“The venom from that snake has poisoned my marriage, has poisoned my family and has poisoned the commonwealth that I love,” she said.
“I am the one who opened the door and I blame no one but myself.”
