Clinton Foundation taps new chief

Donna Shalala, who served in former President Clinton’s administration, will be the new head of the Clinton Foundation, according to reports.

Her selection comes with the foundation under fire over its fundraising practices, criticism that could hurt Hillary Clinton’s likely presidential campaign.

{mosads}Shalala, a former secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services for eight years, announced in September she’d step down as president of the University of Miami at the end of the current school year. At that point, she will move to New York to take over the reins of the Clinton Foundation as its chief executive officer, according to the The Wall Street Journal.

Shalala has led the Florida school since 2001, and during her tenure has helped raise $3 billion for the university, according to the Journal, skills expected to be useful as at she joins the Clintons’ philanthropic group.

The Clintons’ decision to bring in someone from outside to lead the foundation comes after the Journal last month noted the group had reversed its self-imposed ban on accepting most donations from foreign governments.

The ban had been in effect during Clinton’s tenure as secretary of State from 2009 to 2013. State Department officials reviewed donations to the group during that time.

Hillary Clinton rejoined the renamed Bill, Hillary & Chelsea Clinton Foundation after leaving the Obama administration, and since then the group has accepted millions of dollars in contributions.

The foundation said recently it would reconsider taking foreign donations if Clinton launches a presidential bid.

This weekend, the Clintons are scheduled to host a meeting with students at the University of Miami as part of the Clinton Global Initiative, where all three are expected to speak.

That appearance caps a week dominated by the revelations that Hillary Clinton exclusively used a personal email account during her tenure as secretary of State.
